SCRAWL ****1/2

Tonight I have a book review for you! I just finished SCRAWL by Mark Shulman. I REALLY liked it. It was sort of written in a journal form, but not anything like Diary of a Wimpy Kid. It was more like a chapter book, which I enjoyed.

Tod is the main character in this story, and he is a bully. He is in trouble, so he's serving time in detention instead of being expelled from school. In detention, he has to write in a journal. This book tells a story through the journal that has enough surprises to keep you reading! I really enjoyed it!

Perhaps you noticed that I have it 4 and a half stars instead of five. I didn't give it five just because I wasn't hooked on it so much that I read it ALL the time. I read it daily, it just wasn't a "five" for me. *grin*

So, go ahead, check it out, you'll be glad you did.

By the way, I put it on my reading log. It was 240 pages toward our STAFF team count. How many have you read? *grin*

HAPPY READING!

TIME TO READ *grin*

So, Summer Break is upon us.

Have you cried every day since we got out of school at 1:30 on Monday? *grin*

I'll admit it, I LOVE it because I now have time to read all the books that are on my nightstand. I'll be busy this summer, but I already have two books beside me now, just waiting to be read!

I'm currently reading "Scrawl" and will have a review up soon. I only have a few pages left. I will begin book #1 of Dork Diaries after that! I've read ALL of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid stories but NONE of the Dork Diaries. I'm curious to see how I like them.

So, go ahead, fight the tears. We have a lot of Summer left! Get out those books! Remember, there's a reading challenge between staff and students to get Mrs. Trigg up on the roof of the school!

BIG NATE GOES FOR BROKE *****

Okay, okay, I have been a slacker on blogging lately. The end-of-year school stuff has kept me REALLY busy. The good news though is that I have TWO reviews for you. I'll do one tonight, and one later this week. That way I can get further in my new book and get closer to another review. *grin*

I finished Big Nate Goes for Broke, and LOVED it! It was, in my opinion, the best Big Nate book that Lincoln Pierce has written so far. It was funny, and included twists and turns that I didn't see coming! I REALLY enjoyed it!

So, as you're getting your books for SUMMER BREAK, be sure to check out BIG NATE GOES FOR BROKE. You'll be glad you did!

INCARCERON ****

Tonight I have a book review for you! I just finished INCARCERON by Catherine Fisher last night and wanted to take a moment to post about it.

My brother recommended the book to me, and I was really excited about it. I jumped into it with both feet, but found myself re-reading parts of it. I spent WEEKS on this book, and while I will say it earned four stars for creativity of plot and it kept me going until the end, it was also a book I FORCED myself to read at the end of the day. I've shared before about the difficulty for me to abandon a book, and it wasn't that I wanted to abandon it, it also wasn't a book that I thought "Oh, I can't wait to read it tonight." *grin*

I will say that if you enjoyed HUNGER GAMES and MAZE RUNNER you would probably enjoy this book. It really did have a little bit of both in it, complete with action and suspense.

As for me, I've started BIG NATE GOES FOR BROKE and will probably finish it tonight. I'll have a post up about it soon! *grin*

Go ahead, check out INCARCERON by Catherine Fisher if you're a MAZE RUNNER/HUNGER GAMES fan!

My books are piling up for Summer Break! Woohoo!

FLOORS by Patrick Carman *****

I recently finished another book by Patrick Carman that I wanted to share with the Loyal Readers of the blog. I read FLOORS Book #1 by Patrick Carman and really enjoyed it. I have to admit, it was different from any other book I have read, but that is what I liked about it.

Imagine a hotel that has some of the coolest rooms in it, with hidden passageways, ducks, and other amazing characters. I was first drawn to the book on Patrick Carman's website. On the site is the actual author does his own "trailer" for the book. That's what made me buy the book and read it. You should check it out, click on the Patrick Carman link on the right side of this blog page to go to the site, and then click on "Floors." It will make you read the book! *grin*

Go ahead, check it out! We have a THREE-DAY WEEKEND, and PLENTY of time to read!

THE HUNGER GAMES

Today I went and saw THE HUNGER GAMES movie! Wait a second, I should back up...

A couple years ago, my brother gave me the book THE HUNGER GAMES for Christmas. He teaches at a Middle School, and his wife teaches at a high school, and it was popular in both their schools. I had not heard of it, but was intrigued by the jacket cover that had a summary of the book. My brother said he really liked it, but wasn't sure if it was going to be my kind of book. I have to say, my brother, Jeff, is GREAT at sending books my way. While we don't always enjoy the same books, sometimes we do and that is really cool, in my opinion. We are from a family of readers, so it makes sense that we swap books from time to time. (I recommended THE MAZE RUNNER to him.)

After Jeff gave me the book, I read it VERY quickly. I REALLY enjoyed it, and went on to read the rest of the series. I really enjoyed it, as the voice of Katniss came out so clearly throughout the turn of events in the story. I really enjoyed the whole thing, and it really made me think about the world in a bigger picture. Of course, it's a fictional story, but it made me grateful for the United States and the world we live in. I could go on and on, but my point is, I REALLY liked the books.

When I heard that they were making a movie of the book, I was excited. I also wondered how they would make it. It was such a creative book, I was wondering how it would compare to the book. Most of the time, I will see a movie that is made from a book and not like it. Today was different for me though.

I REALLY liked the movie and thought it stuck to the book really well. I will admit, it has been a while since I read the books, but the main parts I remembered, and I enjoyed following the adventure all over again. It was a fun ride, as I told someone earlier.

I'm sure you've been in classes where you have watched a movie after you've read a book. While it's typically not the same, as you can't read/hear the thoughts and feelings of the characters, it is neat because the story is told in a new way on the big screen.

First and foremost, I recommend this book for fifth and sixth graders. It is a really good adventure! THEN ASK YOUR PARENTS to take you to the movie. You'll be amazed at the comparisons you make. *grin*

"LET THE ODDS BE EVER IN YOUR FAVOR"

That's my favorite quote from the book and movie.
Enjoy!

THE WEDNESDAY WARS *****

I have another book review tonight for the Loyal Readers of the blog! I read THE WEDNESDAY WARS by GARY D. SCHMIDT. I REALLY enjoyed it. Holling, the main character, thinks his teacher, Mrs. Baker, hates his guts. Mrs. Baker introduces Holling to Shakespeare, which he hates at first but begins to like. Throughout a school year, Holling Hoodhood learns a lot about life, love, and everything in between.

I LOVE the voice that Gary Schmidt gave Holling in this book. It is told from Holling's point of view, and it is definitely what I see a kid saying throughout various situations in his life. I LOVED it!

So, if you enjoy adventure, humor, and mystery, you will LOVE this book!

Check it out, you'll be glad you did! *grin*

By the way, if you can't find a copy, come by my room and I'll loan ya mine!

National Geographic Kids Magazine

Do you have a magazine that you enjoy reading? Tonight I was thinking about our blog, and I realized that I have neglected to share that even if you read a magazine, that is TOTALLY cool! Some people prefer to read magazines to books. I don't, but some people do. I know some adults that subscribe to a lot of different magazines and don't pick up a book to read. That's cool. I mean, it's amazing some of the things you can learn from a magazine.

In December, I decided that I really like National Geographic Kids Magazine, and went to order a subscription for myself. As it turns out, the website isn't set up for adults to order for themselves. It's set up for adults to order for kids. So guess what I did...I ordered it for my DOG. That's right, every month a new magazine comes for JAY SPRINGER. *grin* It's okay, Jay doesn't mind sharing. *grin*

I love the magazine and typically put it in my magazine basket in my classroom right away, as I have a few students who LOVE non-fiction and will read the magazine from cover to cover. I received the latest issue the other day. Here are some examples of things you can learn:

Babies have taste buds in their cheeks.

Finland holds an annual cell phone-throwing contest.

The human body contains a tiny amount of gold.

A horse from Missouri is so small she sleeps in a doghouse.

(Facts taken from "Weird but True" April 2012 Nat'l Geo. Kids Magazine.)

I encourage you to pick up a magazine. You'll be amazed at what you might learn & enjoy!

TRACKERS by Patrick Carman ****1/2

Today I have another book review for you!!! I just finished book #2 of TRACKERS by Patrick Carman. This book was quite creative, with an online component to it. In other words, I would read a little bit, and then a website and password were given in the book for a video to be shown that would go along with the story line. Patrick Carman also did this in the SKELETON CREEK Series, and added I found that it added a really cool dimension to the story line. It was a lot of fun.

You might be wondering why I gave it four an a half out of five stars. It was REALLY good, but I wasn't into it like I was THE SKELETON CREEK series. I didn't find myself wondering what was going to happen next outside of my reading time, so that tells me it earned four-and-a-half stars instead of five.

If you enjoy electronics, mystery, and action, you WILL enjoy this book. There are two books in the series, and I HIGHLY recommend checking them out. You'll be glad you did!
