Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Monday we honor Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday. Although he was actually born on January 15, we always celebrate it on the Monday surrounding his Birthday. Martin Luther King Junior was a man who had a dream. He wanted his children to live in a country where the content of their character meant more than the color of their skin. Do you understand what that means?

At that time in America's history, people with black skin were separated from people with white skin. In a sense, people with black skin were viewed as less than people with white skin. That was in the 1950's and 1960's. That was a long time ago.

In 1963 he said a famous speech that you might have seen in class or on T.V. It was titled "I Have a Dream." His dream was a big one, and there were a lot of people who did not like his dream. At that same time, there were MANY who did want it to come true.

He went on to take on Civil Rights, and won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

I realize this is really sketchy. I mean, you can go online and research it, or you may have learned a lot about him in school. I do have a point to all of this. Actually, I have two points.

First of all, I used to think that Martin Luther King Junior was cool just because it gave us a day out of school. This is a common thought among kids, and that's okay. I want to challenge you though to think about what an amazing person Martin Luther King Junior was in our Nation's History. Due to his actions, anyone can be anything in today's society. Meaning, it doesn't matter the color of your skin, it now really is the content of your character that makes a difference!

My second point is to encourage you to dream. Martin Luther King Junior's speech is actually pretty long, with specific dreams listed in that speech. I just took a little piece of it to focus on tonight so that my post wouldn't be EXTRA long. I want to point out to you though that some people didn't want this dream to happen, but he kept pursuing it anyway. You might have a dream that is huge or you think is impossible. But don't let that get in your way. I can only imagine how many people told Martin Luther King, Jr. that!

Go ahead, begin to dream! You never know, you may be the next person that we honor for something AMAZING that you do in your life!

*grin*
Oh, and enjoy your day off!
Life.
Is.
GREAT!
