Hi. I bet you're wondering, "Why in the world is there a post titled KC Zoo?" *grin* I'm one of those gals who is always looking for another angle on reading. Today, I saw an angle that I thought you might like to try!
I went with a friend of mine named Chase (Ten Years Old) to the Kansas City Zoo today. We went to the zoo together last year, but we ran out of time, so we didn't even go into the Africa portion of the zoo. Well, today we STARTED in Africa, and had a TERRIFIC time.
If you haven't been to the zoo in a while, you should go. Since last summer, they have added the Sky Lift. Basically, it is an 8 minute ride that takes you 45 feet in the air (basically on a ski lift) over various african animals. You have the option of just riding over to the other side of the Africa portion of the zoo and back, or you can get off and wander throughout Africa. *grin*
We got off the sky lift and walked around. The COOL part was that even up in the air, there were signs to read about the various animals. After you departed the Sky Lift, there were more signs to read about the different animals. It was AMAZING! I learned a lot! For example, I learned that Mr. Swope donated the money for Swope Park and the Zoo, which is why it's called Swope Park. I NEVER KNEW THAT! *grin*
We also rode the tram and train to various parts of the zoo. I was thankful for that, as we got to see some animals by riding instead of walking. It was really neat.
My favorite part were the sea lions. There is a sea lion show, and the sea lions are trained to do tricks! That was SO neat! The next time I go, I want to see the entire show because today we just saw the last few minutes of it. *grin*
My second favorite part was the Polar Bear. The Polar Bear would do flips in the water, it was really fun to watch. At first it was my favorite thing, but after the sea lions show, it was in second place.
Finally, the place I read & learned the most information was in the Reptiles area. In an air conditioned area, they have snakes & reptiles in glass cages. I sat down and read all the signs. Did you know that Snakes don't blink because they don't have eyelids? Instead they have a protective covering already on their eyes. Also, I learned that snakes keep our mice population down because they eat them. There were several other facts that were on signs in that room!
I HIGHLY recommend a zoo trip this summer! You will learn a lot of amazing facts, and have a lot of fun, while you're there. It's amazing what you can learn when you read!
*grin*
LIFE.
IS.
GREAT!!!
